Empty WMI queries, and the missing SQL Server Reporting Services

Problem:

  • WMI Connections to the root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement10 namespace was successful.  However, any queries against this namespace produced no results.  The results were not an error, they were just empty.
  • SQL Server Configuration Manager showed no SQL Server Services as being installed.

Background Information:

Prior to the problem, a request was made to allow a non-Administrator (via a group) to control the reportserver service state.  This was achieved using a group policy.

Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > System Services

The service was configured as Automatic startup and the group was assigned rights to the service with the ability start, stop, and pause the reportserver service.  A policy refresh was performed and the user was able to manage the service successfully.

Resolution:

Edit the group policy that is granting access to the service.  Include "Authenticated Users" with the READ permission.  No restart is required.  No restart is required.
